Considerations for Choosing A Marking Technique

Jan. 06, 2022

Each marking technology has its advantages and disadvantages. Between dot matrix, inkjet printing, laser marking and printed labels, the right solution is not always obvious. The key to choosing the best technology is to understand your marking requirements. This can be done by asking yourself the following questions.

1. Part material and shape

The actual part to be marked should be your starting point when choosing a technique. You need to make sure that it addresses the physical characteristics of the part. To do this, experts will ask you for information about the surface shape, metal alloy, part temperature, part size, number of cavities, etc. These are all factors that will influence your choice of marking system.

2. Marker type

Do you want to mark 2D codes, data matrix codes, alphanumeric serial numbers, graphics or logos? Your identifier type will influence your choice of technology.

Any type of marking system can create 2D codes and alphanumeric serial numbers. However, if you are marking identifiers that must be read by an inline machine with a camera, not all technologies are good choices.

3. Readability and persistence

If marking for traceability, you need to consider the extent to which your identifier can be read by a barcode reader or scanner. Codes created by inkjet or dot matrix printing are more difficult to read due to variable or low contrast.

If you need permanent markings, the best technology is shot peening and laser marking because the markings are engraved directly on the part.

4. Position of the part

The location of the part during marking will limit your choice of marking system. Therefore, the marking specialist will ask if you plan to use a conveyor, robot, or manual workstation for marking. They will also ask for information such as conveyor speed and part positioning error.

5. Post-processing

Under current traceability regulations, more and more manufacturers are required to implement marking operations at the start of production. This is used to track products throughout the supply chain - from the beginning to the end of the life cycle.

When it comes to post-processing resistance, the best solution is laser marking. There are laser etching and laser engraving processes that maintain traceability through powder coating, e-coating, heat treating and shot peening.

When it comes time to choose a technology, remember that there is no one-size-fits-all marking solution. We hope the considerations provided in this article will help you find a solution. Please contact XQL, or drop us a line in the mail and we will give you a professional solution.
